Abstract: This study is aimed to get the description about  Kyais’ perception, as  Islamic  leader,  to the jihad as Islamic ideology through participative observation method and in-depth interview with ten Kyais’ from two of the biggest Islamic organizations in Indonesia. Five Kyais’ from Muhammadiyah and five Kyais’ from  NU (Nahdlatul Ulama). The result of this research showed that Kyais’ perception about jihad ideology could be divided into two categories. The first category is modernist that viewed jihad as inclusive, pluralistic and tolerance ideology. The second category is fundamentalist that viewed jihad as exclusive, singularity and intolerance ideology. Next research can be conducted to study about how jihad ideology acquired and developed in individual, group and society.
