Abstract: Indonesia has 491 etnic with 567 language or dialect, which spread out from Sabang to Merauke. Evolution of information, remarkable mobility across culture for education and employment, and also intercultural contact make these ethnics hard to maintain their cultural identity. Intercultural contact historically has resulted in a variety of identity responses, and ethnical effort to maintain their cultural identity often arouse horizontal conflict or assimilation. The aim of the qualitative research was to describe the cultural identity shifts of ‘Using’ ethnic people as a respon to intercultural contact. The ‘Using” ethnic is one of the Javanese sub-cultures in the East Java Province, Indonesia. The research subjects were seven ‘Using” people in the Kemiren village, Banyuwangi, East-Java. Data was collected by In-depth interview and analysed by content analysis. Results indicate that cultural identity shifts were classified as identity conflict, dual identity, or identity integration. Cultural identity shifts can be discussed.
